Watch Latin American Music Awards
True to form, the TV Academy delivered a fair share of shockers with its annual Emmy nominations. Here’s who got shut out — and who got surprised — this morning.
SNUB: “Empire“
Fox’s smash hit may have registered with fans, but Emmy voters clearly didn’t fall in love with hip-hop. The show scored only three noms, including one for series star Taraji P. Henson.
SURPRISE: Tatiana Maslany, “Orphan Black”
Proving there’s hope for those who are long-snubbed, Maslany finally won a nod for her work playing multiple characters on BBC America’s acclaimed series.
SNUB: The CW
The network just can’t get any respect from the Academy. Despite critical praise and Golden Globe wins, “Jane the Virgin” and its charming series star, Gina Rodriguez, was all but ignored by Emmy voters. The only nod the series earned was for its voiceover artist, Anthony Mendez.
SNUB: “The Big Bang Theory”
CBS’ longtime Emmy favorite was shut out of the best comedy race, as was star Jim Parsons, who won the trophy last year.
SNUB: “Mad Men” supporting players
Christina Hendricks made the cut (as did Jon Hamm and Elisabeth Moss in lead), but no other actors from the show’s farewell season were recognized in supporting or guest categories, including John Slattery, Vincent Kartheiser, January Jones or guests Kiernan Shipka, Jessica Pare, Julia Ormond, Aaron Staton and Robert Morse.
SURPRISE: Two noms even the most adventurous pundits never saw coming: Niecy Nash for “Getting On” and Keegan Michael Key for “Key & Peele.”
SNUB: “The Good Wife”
CBS’ procedural didn’t score a nod either for best drama or last year’s best actress winner, Julianna Margulies. Guess it’s just never going to make a comeback.
SURPRISE: Gaby Hoffmann
The veteran actress got two nominations: supporting actress for Amazon’s “Transparent” and guest actress for HBO’s “Girls.” Her “Transparent” mom, Judith Light, was snubbed.
SURPRISE: It’s a huge morning for Comedy Central, between acting noms for Key and Amy Schumer and the three sketch series noms for “Drunk History,” “Inside Amy Schumer” and “Key & Peele.”
SNUB: “The Affair”
Showtime’s freshman series may have won the Golden Globe — along with acting nods for its leads — but Emmy voters weren’t as charmed by the marital drama.
SURPRISE: “Homeland”
That said, Showtime has to be happy with the return to the drama race of “Homeland.” Ignored last year, the CIA thriller rebounded creatively — and voters took notice.
SNUB: “The Americans”
FX’s espionage drama tops nearly all critics’ top 10 lists, yet is criminally ignored by Emmys. What is it going to take to get the Academy to recognize it? Ditto “Justified,” which deserved some attention for its final brilliant season.
